Change the Direction of Ceiling Fan: 3 Reasons to keep your ceiling fan ON during Winter
A ceiling fan can help maintain comfortable temperatures during the not only for summer but for Winter as well. How can you stay warm and save money this winter?
Check out these 3 Reasons to keep your ceiling fan ON during Winter:
- Redistribution of the warm air will make your room feel warm and more comfortable.
- Save up to 15% on heating costs.
- Reduce the cost of heating fuel.
In the Winter, your ceiling fans should rotate clockwise at a low speed. This pulls cold air up toward the ceiling, which in turn displaces the warm air that collects near the ceiling. This makes a room feel warmer, which enables you to lower the thermostat temperature and decrease the use of heating devices. The low speed prevents any drafty “wind chill” and keeps the airflow steady and consistent. Homeowners who change the directions of their ceiling fans for the Winter can save up to 15 percent on their heating bills.
How can you know if your ceiling fan direction is set for Winter? Turn on the ceiling fan, stand under the fan blades and look up to see if the blades are rotating clockwise. The fan blades should rotate like hands on a clock, starting from the top, moving around to the right, and back to the top.
Changing the direction of your ceiling fans WILL NOT work for Vaulted Ceilings. If you have a ceiling fan is mounted on a vaulted ceiling, the fan is too high and should stay in a counterclockwise setting all year round.
For ceiling fans WITH remote controls:
Press the reverse button on your remote control to set your fan to spin clockwise. Remember to adjust your thermostat to save money and energy.
For ceiling fans WITHOUT remote controls:
Find the switch on the motor housing just below the blades. Flip the switch to change the direction of the fan blades. For vertical switches, flip the switch up for winter direction. For horizontal switches, flip the switch to the right for winter direction. Remember to adjust your thermostat to save money and energy.
Now that you know this tip, remembering to change the direction of your ceiling fans will be your most difficult task. One way to remind yourself by doing this every Daylight Saving Time. With Daylight Savings falling on dates in the spring and fall, these are the perfect times to adjust your ceiling fan.
