In the Winter, your ceiling fans should rotate clockwise at a low speed. This pulls cold air up toward the ceiling, which in turn displaces the warm air that collects near the ceiling. This makes a room feel warmer, which enables you to lower the thermostat temperature and decrease the use of heating devices. The low speed prevents any drafty “wind chill” and keeps the airflow steady and consistent. Homeowners who change the directions of their ceiling fans for the Winter can save up to 15 percent on their heating bills.

How can you know if your ceiling fan direction is set for Winter? Turn on the ceiling fan, stand under the fan blades and look up to see if the blades are rotating clockwise. The fan blades should rotate like hands on a clock, starting from the top, moving around to the right, and back to the top.

Changing the direction of your ceiling fans WILL NOT work for Vaulted Ceilings. If you have a ceiling fan is mounted on a vaulted ceiling, the fan is too high and should stay in a counterclockwise setting all year round.
